Business context:
The development of a new fully aligned global communications function to support Unilever’s Compass ambition of doubling the size of the company while reducing the environmental footprint and increasing positive social impact
Based on its success over the past three years, it is now time for the global communications function to embark on its next stage of evolution to support the ‘purpose’ of the new function: to create a movement for Sustainable Growth among employees and external stakeholders, and to ensure the purpose is embedded in the organization

Main purpose of the job
To support UFS’s Exec team in the role as trusted advisor and business partner to the UFS leader
To be the ‘storyteller’ for UFS both internally and externally
To be the ‘issues slayer’ for the UFS and to support where relevant on Cross business issues
To actively contribute to a dynamic communications environment of continuous improvement and effectiveness.
Where the focus of the role will be on being a trusted advisor and storyteller
Main accountabilities:
As a trusted advisor, you will:
  • Deliver a UFS Communications capability by planning and executing communications activities, mainly internally, but also externally, and act as a trusted Business Partner to the UFS Category President
  • Activate an integrated and effective communications strategy which demonstrably supports the top business priorities, the purpose & the UFS Sustainable Living Plan.
  • Make sure all messages from the Exec are consistent and complementary and drive advocacy and awareness both internally and externally, targeting various audiences such as KOFs, industry bodies, media, conferences etc.
  • Contribute to an external communications capability and engagement strategy  for UFS – taking into account all forms of media, KOFs, industry bodies, conferences etc
As a storyteller, you will:
  • Create a real turn-around in the internal & external storytelling about  UFS and its brands. You deploy a “nose-to-tail” sustainability narrative to make sustainable living commonplace and to support the business objectives. You will do this through external (corporate) channels and internal delivery mechanisms such as campaigns.
  • You will be developing the narrative and delivery of leadership communications from the Exec , e.g. through (interactive) webcasts, mail etc.
  • Dial effectiveness up by employing an effective channel management strategy and storytelling funnel – which leverages both external channels as well as internal UFS & Unilever channels. You will create a ‘refresh’ of channel management by looking into ways to de-clutter, create advocacy and dialogue, do so by making active use of social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Chatter as well as the UFS portal.
  • You will oversee and actively contribute to the development of engaging stories. You will evaluate the impact of storytelling by creating feedback mechanisms and monitoring channels including (corporate) social media.
  • You will be the custodian of those stories – on the alert for and flagging potential inconsistencies, issues & risks.
As an issues slayer, you will:
  • Advise UFS authoritatively as and when issue occur. To do this you build an excellent grasp of the issues that face the business
  • Become the ‘issues slayer’ for UFS. You handle issues and crisis in the organisation with authority; together with External Affairs you’ll develop issues plans, and create clarity, accountability, capability, consistency and most importantly resolution
  • Execute the contact strategy with rigour – required to enhance, protect and/or defend the reputation of the Company and our brands. You’ll develop issue statements and advise which channels are relevant and effective to protect and build our reputation. Work closely together with members of the Issues & Crisis Team and Category teams, as well as with Supply Chain and R&D.
  • Embed an issues & crisis protocol, programme, training and go-to section on the portal
As a conductor, you will:
  • Be a vocal and pro-active part of a small communications team which delivers excellence in its impact and quality and which can “make the impossible, possible”
  • Develop a good understanding of and build tight-knit relationships with the other Communications Teams
  • Work seamlessly with the other teams in Communications – calling them in as necessary to provide a 360• expert service and joint “nose-to-tail” delivery to the Categories i.e. be the ‘first violin’ of the orchestra
  • Owning championing and developing a specific area of communications expertise within this team

Passion for the Food Service business and its brands
Communications generalist, with an all-round excellent working knowledge of the various disciplines of communications such as media relations, social media, issues management and employee engagement

Cultural sensitivity and resilience
Essential experience:
Between 5 and 10 years experience in internal and external communications, preferably in a Business-to-Business environment,
Has leaded an internal change program
Experienced in storytelling for (corporate) brands, both internal and external communications
Has managed websites and internal portals and has experience in developing them
Proven networking abilities
Has managed issues and worked in an environmental with multiple external stakeholders
